Pumping the Klamath Dry

In the Klamath River Basin these days environmental news is dominated by talk about dam removal and, occasionally, new restrictions on fishing. But now another issue is poised to compete for the headlines. The California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) announced late last month that it plans to give a hundred or so farmers and alfalfa ranchers in Siskiyou County just south of the Oregon border an exemption from the California Endangered Species Act. Released without fanfare, the announcement caused barely a ripple in the regional media. But below the surface a virtual tsunami may be forming.

Eco-Changes You Can See – the Evidence

Ecosystems under Threat: Invasion of the Alien Species

One of the greatest threats to the world’s biodiversity - the richness of its wildlife - is the spread of alien species that have been deliberately or unwittingly introduced into new habitats where they can thrive.

In many ways, the movements of plants and animals around the world by human activity has been an inevitable consequence of the globalised economy in which we now live. Without such movement, we would not enjoy many of the benefits of modern life - but the consequences have been severe for fragile ecosystems.

CDC Biot Para Emerger

Blue Winged Olive’s or Baetis are a staple item of the diets of trout in our area, hatching at two times of the year in the fall and spring. Although many patterns exist to imitate the various stages of development of this bug, trout can be very selective during hatches, keying in on emerger’s when spinners and duns are plentiful. This emerger has produced fish for me from the Yellowstone to the Madison to the East Gallatin and Milesnick’s Spring Creek.

An interesting twist to this bug is to change the white antron to orange, pink, or green making a Hi-Vis version.

COYHAIQUE PATAGONIA CHILE

OUR OPERATION IN PATAGONIA CHILE

Each of our guides has four or more years experience fishing and exploring these waters. They are both native Chilean and American. Our equipment includes jet powered boats, rubber rafts with high-back seats, Zodiacs with jet engines and good vehicles with trailers to reach all the waters we fish.

Streams and fishing in this area are within 45 minutes from Cinco Rios Chile. Many of the streams have seldom, if ever, been fished; some have been discovered only recently. The streams offer diverse fishing; incredible, exciting dry fly action; and, challenging sight fishing in pristine, clean waters. Some brown trout, only accessible by our jet boats because of limited roads, have never seen a dry fly. Large fish abound with many Browns over 18 inches.

On your way to nearby rivers and lakes, you may encounter local huasos or ranchers driving their cattle or sheep along the roads or into the hills. You might think you are lost in the wild west of days gone by until you realize a huaso may shuttle your boat with his oxen.

Coyhaique- Patagonia Chile

Fish in Patagonia

In the northern part of Patagonia, Chilean side, is located Coyhaique (koy-ike).

This very nice and cozy town was settled in between two rivers (Simpson and Coyhaique) and surrounded for a big number of lakes and lagoons.

Is in the Andes chain mountain slopes where we have our flyfishing operation. we feel very privileged out of a number of chances to enjoy a good day of fishing.

As we told before, we are surrounded by water, so within 45 minutes maximum anglers can experience deferent types of fishing.

Always remember that the beauty and diversity of the landscape in this area is what we consider a big bonus in your fishing trip.

Meandrous spring creeks, creeks, all size rivers, lakes and lagoons, you can find in our backyard.

The valleys were form by glaciers, and most of the water that we have around is as clear as you probably never seen before.

The geography is diverse, so the weather is too, is unpredictable, so a good recommendation, always be prepare for the rain and the wind.

In a normal week of fishing you can be taken to small spring creeks, some where in the Patagonian pampas, East side of the region, your first impression would be like fishing around Montana or Wyoming.

Also, float trips are available, we have 5 different rivers to pick and fish for days.

Fly fish the lakes and lagoons is a highly recommended option, specially for people that never try it before in Patagonia. In a good day you will see trout taking your dries, most of them good size fish.

The Pacific Ocean, is about one hour and 30 minutes driving from our lodge. steep mountains cover with thick vegetation, big size rivers near the fjords.

these kind are the most unpredictable water around. we know how to fish them, and we can tell you that there are very interesting fish (trout and salmon) moving back and forward from the ocean to the rivers.

I could be telling you “big fish” or ... “I lost count” type of stories for pages, trying to explain how good the fishing is in Patagonia. But what I can tell you anglers is how close the opportunity to fish in water that not many people has been before.

We like to explore Patagonia, because it has not been at all.  you want to enjoy us, give us a call
