COYHAIQUE PATAGONIA CHILE

OUR OPERATION IN PATAGONIA CHILE

Each of our guides has four or more years experience fishing and exploring these waters. They are both native Chilean and American. Our equipment includes jet powered boats, rubber rafts with high-back seats, Zodiacs with jet engines and good vehicles with trailers to reach all the waters we fish.

Streams and fishing in this area are within 45 minutes from Cinco Rios Chile. Many of the streams have seldom, if ever, been fished; some have been discovered only recently. The streams offer diverse fishing; incredible, exciting dry fly action; and, challenging sight fishing in pristine, clean waters. Some brown trout, only accessible by our jet boats because of limited roads, have never seen a dry fly. Large fish abound with many Browns over 18 inches.

On your way to nearby rivers and lakes, you may encounter local huasos or ranchers driving their cattle or sheep along the roads or into the hills. You might think you are lost in the wild west of days gone by until you realize a huaso may shuttle your boat with his oxen.

Coyhaique- Patagonia Chile

Fish in Patagonia

In the northern part of Patagonia, Chilean side, is located Coyhaique (koy-ike).

This very nice and cozy town was settled in between two rivers (Simpson and Coyhaique) and surrounded for a big number of lakes and lagoons.

Is in the Andes chain mountain slopes where we have our flyfishing operation. we feel very privileged out of a number of chances to enjoy a good day of fishing.

As we told before, we are surrounded by water, so within 45 minutes maximum anglers can experience deferent types of fishing.

Always remember that the beauty and diversity of the landscape in this area is what we consider a big bonus in your fishing trip.

Meandrous spring creeks, creeks, all size rivers, lakes and lagoons, you can find in our backyard.

The valleys were form by glaciers, and most of the water that we have around is as clear as you probably never seen before.

The geography is diverse, so the weather is too, is unpredictable, so a good recommendation, always be prepare for the rain and the wind.

In a normal week of fishing you can be taken to small spring creeks, some where in the Patagonian pampas, East side of the region, your first impression would be like fishing around Montana or Wyoming.

Also, float trips are available, we have 5 different rivers to pick and fish for days.

Fly fish the lakes and lagoons is a highly recommended option, specially for people that never try it before in Patagonia. In a good day you will see trout taking your dries, most of them good size fish.

The Pacific Ocean, is about one hour and 30 minutes driving from our lodge. steep mountains cover with thick vegetation, big size rivers near the fjords.

these kind are the most unpredictable water around. we know how to fish them, and we can tell you that there are very interesting fish (trout and salmon) moving back and forward from the ocean to the rivers.

I could be telling you “big fish” or ... “I lost count” type of stories for pages, trying to explain how good the fishing is in Patagonia. But what I can tell you anglers is how close the opportunity to fish in water that not many people has been before.

We like to explore Patagonia, because it has not been at all.  you want to enjoy us, give us a call

Weather – We started to see our air temperatures bump up ever so slightly this past week.  We are also starting to feel a little humidity in the air as well.  Our evenings are not cooling off as quickly as they were just a few weeks ago.  We began the week with slightly overcast skies and a North wind but by Thursday we were back to calm seas and bright sunny conditions.

Air temperatures:  Low 65 High 86

Water temperatures:  66 to 77

Beach Fishing Report:  This past week the beach fishing was difficult early in the week as the North wind and waves it produced made the water churned up and off color.  By Thursday the wind had stopped and the water had settled slightly making my trip with Scott Turnipseed and his group of friends challenging as the wind had caused the water to be slightly off color and the bait had moved from where it was located before the wind.  With persistence we were able to find a couple of roosterfish that the group could throw their flies at and although we had some great followers we could not entice a roosterfish to eat the fly.  We also saw some nice jacks but again they had a case of lock jaw.

Inshore Fishing Report: Between the winds this past week the inshore was very good.  I spent three days with my guest Dave Waltz and his wife Nancy from Minnesota and we had some great fishing.  We found numerous roosterfish and jacks that were willing to eat the bait we were throwing and every once in a while we could fool one of them into eating a fly.  On the first day we were out together Dave hooked and landed two very nice roosterfish and that afternoon he hooked a very big rooster.  After fighting this fish for just over an hour with the fish pulling line off the reel and the boat chasing it down so we could get line back only to have the process start all aver again the twenty pound tippet broke.  After this Dave took out his frustrations out on a nice big school of ladyfish and after catching more than he could count he felt a little better.  I hate to say it but Dave’s story dose not end here.  The very next day Dave hooked a very big jack that our captain estimates was about forty pounds and after another long fight the fish once again escaped when the leader broke.  We continue to see some bigger roosterfish under bird schools along with some very nice schools of jacks.  The inshore fishing for ladyfish is very good when you find them.  I have also heard of some very nice pargo staring to show in the area as well.

Offshore Fishing Report:  We continue to see good action for marlin and sailfish.  The fishing for Dorado has picked up from last week.  If you were willing to take the long ride outside some of the boats found some very good action for yellow fin tuna that were found with the porpoise.  This past week we also had some very good action for bonito as well.

High light of the Week:  The fishing is picking up and should continue to get better this next week if the winds stay down.

Weather – This past week the beautiful weather continued.  We did not see any North wind this past week.  The lack of wind made for great fishing conditions.  The air temperatures are heating up and we are starting to feel the humidity.  It looks like it might be an early spring.

Air temperatures:  Low 61 High 90

Water temperatures:  66 to 73

Beach Fishing Report:  The fishing along the beach was excellent for small rooster fish and even a few small jacks mixed in.  Our guest Gary Chandler from Tacoma Washington fished with my guide Lance Peterson from the beach on Wednesday the 14th as I was in Cabo guiding other clients and they had a bang up day.  Lance and Gary report they had a great day catching over a dozen small rooster fish and a couple small jacks.  Lance also reported they fished for some nice croaker as well.

Inshore Fishing Report:  Inshore fishing this past week was very good for Rob Morton.  Rob and I fished out of a panga on Thursday the 15th where we encountered some very nice schools of bigger rooster fish.  Rob hooked and landed two very nice rooster fish both fish between fifteen and twenty pounds.  Rob and I were able to get many other shots at other roosters as well having two very big rooster fish try and eat the fly but as they took a swipe at the fly the fish just plain missed leaving Rob and I saying to each other did you see that!!

Offshore Fishing Report:  This past week the offshore fishing remained consistent for medium sized dorado along with marlin.  The marlin have bee concentrated in the area of Cabo Pulmo.  The dorado have been in the same area.  I did see a boat as well this week flying a number of Tuna flags but I did not hear where the captain found them.

High light of the Week:  If the weather continues to cooperate and the fishing remains on the track it is on now we should see some very good fishing in the up coming weeks.

Weather – This past week we saw a little of everything when it came to the North winds.  We started the week with some strong winds and got a break from them for three days mid week and by the weekend they had returned.  The temperatures have been very pleasant and the night time lows did not dip quite as low this past week making the early mornings slightly chilly and not down right cold.

Air temperatures:  Low 57 High 79

Water temperatures:  66 to 71

Beach Fishing Report:  The fishing along the beach continued to be very good when the wind subsided.  We had very good catches this past week.  We found lots of small rooster fish along with very good numbers of lady fish and even the occasional pompano and Mexican look down mixed in.  The beach fishing was very good this past week in and around the area of Hotel Rancho Leonero.

Inshore Fishing Report:  Inshore fishing this past week was excellent for nice sized jacks and lots of ladyfish and even the occasional yellowtail.

Offshore Fishing Report:  This past we continued to see some stripe marlin in the area along with a few very nice sized dorado.  Most of the fish were out in front of La Ribera off shore about six miles.

High light of the Week:  This past week was full of excitement for me as my very close friend and guide Jeff Solis took part in filming a television show that will be shown on the Verses network later this summer entitled adventure guides.  We found some excellent fishing for our guests for the show Justin Crump and Chris Owens who most of you know as the trout bums.  On day one we found plenty of good marlin action with a double hook up on two very nice stripe marlin after having the teasers in the water for only ten minutes.  Later that day we found some very nice dorado that did not seem to camera shy.  On the second day of the shoot we found excellent action from the beach with Justin and Chris each catching double digit numbers of small roosterfish with the occasional lady fish mixed in.  The third day of shooting we found excellent action on lady fish along with jacks and more small rooster fish as we fished close to shore out of pangas.  I was able to get sardines and boy did the fish respond.  This past week Jeff and I got lucky as the wind calmed and the water was flat as we filmed the show. As the film crew left the wind started again.  I finished the week fishing out of Cabo San Lucas with my guest Joe Coakley from Kirkland Washington where we also had a very good day with good catches of sierra, some very nice gaff top sail pompano and lots green jacks and one very nice yellow tail.

Weather – This past week was one of the nicest weeks we have seen in quite a while.  The North winds were virtually nonexistent and we had plenty of sunshine with some very comfortable temperatures.  The night time lows were warmer as well making this past week very pleasant here in Baja.

Air temperatures:  Low 55 High 79

Water temperatures:  66 to 71

Beach Fishing Report:  The fishing along the beach this past week was some of the best we have seen over the last few weeks.  With the lack of wind I was able to get out a few mornings this past week and found fishing to be a little hit or miss at times but over all I would say it was pretty good for the middle of February.  I had my best luck fishing form eight in the morning until around ten thirty.  I was able to find a few sierras along with the occasional ladyfish and I even found a school of small roosters that were willing to play.

Inshore Fishing Report:  Most of the boats that went out this past week took advantage of the weather and headed off shore looking for fish.

Offshore Fishing Report:  The boats that got out this week form Hotel Palmas de Cortez did well with catches of stripe marlin, tuna and smaller dorado.  Talking with a couple of my friends who are captains in the hotel they found very good action for dorado down around the area of Cabo Pulmo with the tuna coming from a school of porpoise that were located off shore about twenty five miles out in front of La Ribera.  As far as the marlin they have seemed to be scattered throughout the area from Frailes to Punta Pescadero.

High light of the Week:  If we can get another week of good weather the fishing should continue to be good considering it is almost the middle of February.  I will be guiding in Cabo san Lucas for a few days next week and I have had report of a good fishing for tuna and some very nice skip jack off the inner Gordo bank.  I will let every one know what we find, so make sure to check next weeks report.

Gallatin River

The ice is once again dissapearing from the river. Today, the shelf ice is breaking up and the river is just now coming into good shape. Fishing has picked up. The Gallatin is a very reliable winter fishery with nymphs. We are scheduled for some colder weather by the weekend, so hit the river now, before the slush and shelf ice come back. A #10 Tungstone Golden with a #16 Bead Head Pheasant Tail is our favorite searching rig for the Gallatin in winter, but they usually aren’t too fussy. Any combination of Prince and mini beadheads should produce. Focus on the deeper runs. When the water temps come up on warm afternoons you will find the fish at the heads of the pools often sittin under rough water. Don’t be afraid of doubling up your split shot to get under the rough water.

Spring time in Patagonia Chilena

We are about to open the sport fishing season for salmonids in Chile.  at least this October will the opening at Coyhaique area (northern Patagonia).

Yes, another season is comming for us.
and sadly at the northern hemisphere is probably already closed. but that how it is… right?? Difficult to have summer time all year around.

This next summer coming in Patagonia is spec ting to have fishermen visiting around… so for all those I can tell you that we did had a normal winter. snow fall was late this year I could tell that spring time will be melting most of it.

But. you never know.. Patagonia weather is unpredictable. So the best advise to fishermen and visitors is just in case bring you rain jacket and fleece… always better be comfortable first, so then you can enjoy you time fishing.

So, as much the weather is unpredictable the fishing is too… If you have never been in Patagonia, let me tell you that you might find all kinds of water, where trout live.

Lakes, lagoons and small ponds are every where… and rivers, creeks and spring creeks in all sizes are found in this part of the world.

For this Spring fishing will be Ideal in outlets and inlets of big lakes. specially looking for rainbows that still are moving around for spooning.  there some tributaries that should be clear at this time of the year. (spooning season for rainbow August thru November)

Late October is the time to focus on looking for small creeks that guides know where rainbows like spoon, so do not think it twice and give it a try.

now… don`t forget those browns that are waiting for rainbow eggs floating down.

This what should be for Northern Patagonia in the Chilean side. but any ways where ever you are right now “good fishing”

Gallatin River

Hoppers and ants in the valley near town, this will likely be one of the last weeks of really good fishing with terrestrials on the Gallatin with all of the cooler weather in the forecast. Look for some BWO action with the rainy drizzly weather in the forecast. The canyon has still been fishing well with attractors, rubberleg stimulators have been the ticket up in the canyon. Attractor nymphs have been picking up fish throughout the canyon as well, spitfires, some pheasant tails and lightning bugs, pick your favorite and drop it off a bigger stimulator. Towards the park there are some caddis in the evenings, a few remnants of the PMD’s, but don’t look for that to be key. Baetis should start popping up in this section this weekend too. If you want to get some bigger fish on the Gallatin, try deaddrifting some bigger bugger patterns, and in another 2 or 3 weeks go down lower on the river and toss streamers..

Upper Madison

Another week and another set of mixed results from the Upper. If you are going to float this, don’t bother going higher than McAtee bridge, Lyons and Pallisades down hasn’t been fishing typically well for larger fish. Lots of tiny 6-8 inchers up on size 12 and 14 hoppers, if that’s your game go and float Lyons to Mac. Varney down has been decent, although there isn’t a ton of water in the river there is enough to be holding some fish. The half down hopper has been the best bug on the Upper, I think it is because of the way it sits down in the surface film instead of floating way up top like some of the foam patterns. There are a few caddis left in the evenings, but don’t look for this to be great small dry time… Streamer fishing down towards town might be pretty good, if not epic this weekend with the crummy weather in the forecast.

Hopper’s on the Jelly

The hopper fishing on the Yellowstone over labor day weekend was stellar.  We floated from 9th street bridge in Livingston down to Springdale on an over night trip.  We put in around two o’clock the first day and had instant action.  The hopper fishing stayed good for about three hours until it started to cool off.  We caught some nice fish in the 16-20 inch range.  Also, dropping a size 14 lightning bug off the hopper about eighteen inches was productive for smaller fish.  The evening and early morning seemed less productive on hoppers but was still consistent on nymphs.  The middle of the day was by far the best time for hoppers, producing some very nice fish.
