The Century of Drought

One third of the planet will be desert by the year 2100, say climate experts in the most dire warning yet of the effects of global warming

Drought threatening the lives of millions will spread across half the land surface of the Earth in the coming century because of global warming, according to new predictions from Britain’s leading climate scientists.

Extreme drought, in which agriculture is in effect impossible, will affect about a third of the planet, according to the study from the Met Office’s Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research.

Border Fence Could Spell Environmental Disaster

Environmental groups are concerned about a new plan to build a 700-mile long fence along the border with Mexico.

The official plan, as envisaged in a legislative bill on immigration reforms, is meant to stop the flow of undocumented workers from Mexico, but scientists say it will bring nothing but disaster for the biological diversity of the region.

“The only living things the walls won’t stop are people,” said Michael Finkelstein, executive director at the Tucson, Arizona-based Center for Biological Diversity, in a statement.

Record Ozone Loss over Antarctic: European Space Agency

Antarctica in 2006 suffered its highest recorded single-year loss in ozone, the atmospheric molecule that protects against dangerous ultraviolet light, the European Space Agency (ESA) said.

Ozone measurements made by the agency’s Envisat satellite showed a loss of 40 million tonnes in October, exceeding the previous record of 39 million tonnes set in 2000, it said in a press release.

Arctic Summer Ice Anomaly Shocks Scientists

Satellite images acquired from 23 to 25 August 2006 have shown for the first time dramatic openings over a geographic extent larger than the size of the British Isles � in the Arctic�s perennial sea ice pack north of Svalbard, and extending into the Russian Arctic all the way to the North Pole.
